Tasting Teas at Hunan Tea
Today we visited Hunan Tea Company, one of the largest producers and exporters of tea in China. Their establishment is impressive - Offices, Processing Facilities, Packing, Transportation, Cold Storage, an Extract and Capsule plant as well as a Tea Museum, a Tea Room open to the public, a small Tea Garden with more than 50 varietals, a Research Facility and Testing Lab. And we saw it all followed by a lengthy tasting of several teas, primarily Green and a few White. A significant difference in tasting here - they routinely use 5-7 grams of tea per cup and steep 5 minutes. We discussed this at length and even though that is the authentic method here, we know that would never work in the U.S, where we typically use 2 grams and steep for 2-3 minutes. (And I need one of these tea scales!).
